Greensboro, NC –
The Florida State softball team has won nine regular season ACC titles, eight ACC championships and has won more conference games than any other school and the league’s coaches are predicting nothing is going to change in 2003. The Seminoles received four of five first place votes and 24 points to finish No. 1 in the 2003 ACC preseason softball poll.
“It is always an honor to have the other league coaches think so highly of you and we are appreciative of that,” said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. “This conference is getting better and better every year and it is going to be a fight like it is every season. We haven’t won the league championship in a couple of years and that is a main goal of ours this season and every year.”
Georgia Tech, who received the other first place vote, won the 2002 ACC Title and was picked to finish second, six points behind the Seminoles. North Carolina was pegged to finish third while Virginia and Maryland were picked fourth and fifth respectively.
Last season both Georgia Tech and Florida State made it to the finals of the NCAA Regional. Both schools also ended the year ranked amongst the Top 25. Only four conferences ended up with more schools in the top 25 and only the Pac-10 had a higher percentage of their membership ranked at the end of the season.
The Tribe opens their home schedule at the newly-renovated Seminole Softball Complex Tuesday, February 4 versus Auburn. The doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m. and there will be a celebration between games to honor the 2002 Women’s College World Series semi-finalists.
