TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida State men’s tennis team (20-1, 4-0 ACC) made routine work of NC State (11-4, 1-3 ACC) as they defeated them 4-0 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. It was the 12th home win of the season and helped the Seminoles reach the 20-win mark for the fifth time under head coach Dwayne Hultquist
“It was a good match for us,” said Hultquist. “It was against a top-25 team. They have really done a good job of turning their program around this year. I liked the fact that we were in on every match on every court. We are getting good efforts from everyone all the way through the lineup.”
The day got started as the Noles captured the doubles point for the 16th time this season. Redshirt senior Jose Gracia and sophomore Alex Knaff gave the Garnet and Gold a 1-0 lead in doubles with a quick 6-2 win on court two. The Wolfpack tied it up winning on court three but the Seminole duo of senior Guy Iradukunda and junior Aziz did what they needed to and defeated NC State’s No. 23 ranked doubles pair of Michael Ogden and Alexis Galarneau 6-4 on court one.
Heading into singles play up 1-0, the Seminoles never looked back. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain earned his 15th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court three. He was followed by Knaff on court five who won 6-2, 6-2 for his sixth win of the spring. Dougaz then clinched his third match of the season with a big win over No. 25 Alexis Galarneau on court one 7-5, 6-2. Gracia was in match point as the match was clinched and was not able to finish.
The Seminole will be back on the court Sunday as they host Wake Forest on the ACC Network.
“It is not often that you get the number one team in the country,” said Hultquist. “A couple of years ago we played No. 1 North Carolina here and beat them. It is exciting. We have played as the favorite almost the entire year. We are not going to be favored but this is a great opportunity for us on Sunday.”
