No. 9 Florida State earned its second top-five team finish of the fall season and All-Americans Jonas Blixt and Matt Savage finished in the top five of the individual standings as competition at the Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympic Fields Country Club came to a close Monday. The Seminoles finished ahead of four teams ranked in the nation’s top 15 including No. 5 ranked Stanford as they continued to improve their national profile.
No. 13 Oklahoma State, led by individual medalist Rickie Fowler, claimed the team championship with a seven stroke victory over Texas. The Cowboys had two individuals finish in the top six and three in the top 12 in earning the win. They took the lead in the first round and held the top spot throughout the second and third rounds. Florida State finished in fourth to mark the second time this season it had earned a top five finish – the Seminoles won the team championship at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) carded a two-over par 72 in the third round to finish in fourth place in the individual standings. It marked the his third consecutive top-five finish after earning medalist honors at the Inverness Intercollegiate and finishing in fifth place at the PING/Golf Week Preview. Blixt was the low-man for the Seminoles in the final round. He opened his final round with an eagle three on the par five first hole to get his round off to a good start and had two holes at par or better for the round.
Savage (Louisville, Ky.) finished in fifth place in the individual standings as he carded a 73 in the final round of the event. The finish marked Savage’s second top-five finish of the fall season; he finished in a tie for fifth at the Inverness Intercollegiate. Savage recovered from a triple-bogey on the par four seventh hole to finish at one-under par over his final 11 holes of the afternoon.
Senior Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) finished as the third highest ranking Seminole in the event and closed his third round with a 76 and a 225 three-round total. He closed well as he played his final nine holes at only two-over par to record his second best single-round score of the tournament. Jeon was playing in his first event for the Seminoles since the Seminole Intercollegiate during March of this past spring season.
Seminole sophomore Seath Lauer finished in a tie for 48th place as he closed with a 77. His best round – the second – saw him card a two-over par score of 72. Freshman Drew Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who carded a 75 in the first round, was forced to withdraw from the event prior to the second round a because of illness.
The Seminoles are back in action at the Isleworth Intercollegiate at Windermere, Fla. on Oct. 21-23.
