PINEHURST, N.C. –
Florida State University senior Lacey Agnew is in a tie for second place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in first place in the team standings heading into the third and final round of the Pinehurst Challenge on Pinehurst No. 6 at the famed Pinehurst Golf Club. Agnew leads a quartet of Seminole players in the top 10 of the individual standings as Florida State holds an 18 stroke lead over both Campbell and Maryland with 18 holes remaining to be played.
The Seminoles’ carded the two best rounds of the day – 287 in the first round and 290 in the second round – to build a commanding lead over the first 36 holes of the tournament. Florida State held an 11 stroke lead over Campbell and Maryland after the first round as the Seminoles counted four scores at 74 or better with junior Macarena Silva carding a team leading 67. The Seminoles extended their lead to 18 over the second round of 18 holes as they once again counted four scores at 74 or better including a two-under par 70 by Agnew.
Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.) played very consistently during the day with scores of 72 in the first round and a two-under par score of 70 in the in the second round. She is the Seminoles’ leader with a total of 142 and is three strokes behind the lead of Christine Shimel of Maryland.
“I knew it was going to be a long day from the start, so I just tried to place myself,” said Agnew. “I was hitting the ball well and hitting it close. After the first round I new I could fire at some pins even with the bad weather. I made a few more putts in the second round and finished strong as I birdied three of my last four holes.”
Junior Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) carded the best round of the day with a 67 in the first round and is in a tie for fourth place with a two round total of 144. Her first round score of 67 was the best score of the two rounds played by the 93 golfers in the event.
Sophomore Hannah Thomson (Perth, Australia) is in a tie for seventh place with a two round total of 146. She carded an even par 72 in the second round after opening the event with a two-over par 74. Additionally, sophomore Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) is in a tie for 10th place with a 148 total for the first two rounds. She carded identical scores of 74 in the first two rounds of the event.
The Seminoles begin play in Tuesday’s third and final round playing for their second team championship and fourth top two team finish of the year. Florida State won the team championship of the University of Kentucky Invitational and finished in second place in both the Cougar Classic and the Eat A Peach Invitational during the fall season.
