ATHENS, Ga. – Florida State men’s tennis player No. 33Clint Bowles defeated two players today, October 25, to advance to the finals of singles play at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship. The doubles duo of Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith advance to the finals of doubles after their opponent had to default due to an injury.
On the main singles draw, the junior Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) defeated Georgia Tech’s Miguel Muguruza 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. Bowles faced No. 23 Alex Lacroix of Florida in the semifinals of the singles main draw to win 7-5, 6-0. Bowles faces No. 38 Javier Garrapiz of Georgia tomorrow at 10 a.m.
“He beat Muguruza 6-3, 6-3 and really got off to a quick start in both sets and kind of rolled in the quarterfinals,” explained head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “In the semifinals he played Lacroix, who is really one of the better in the country. The first set was very tight and kind of back and forth. Clint chased a couple set points against him but he kind of fought him off and won 7-5 and ran away with the second set 6-0.”
“We’re excited about him playing in the finals tomorrow against Garrapiz,” continued Hultquist. “It should be a really good matchup between a very consistent guy and Clint who is kind of an aggressive baseliner.”
Earlier in the day, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) fell to Lacroix of Florida in an exciting three set match 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
“Vahid lost his match in three set to Lacroix from Florida,” stated Hultquist. “Vahid and Clint played the same guy. I thought Vahid played well. I thought it was really good tennis and he came up just a little bit short. He had a great weekend. This is probably his best tournament, for sure in the fall, and he clearly played very well tennis.”
Mirzadeh and freshman Smith (Tampa, Fla.) advance to the doubles’ final after No. 2 Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt of Georgia had to pull out due to an injury. They will face the winner of the Georgia/Florida doubles match tomorrow.
The finals of singles and doubles will be played tomorrow at the Dan Magill tennis Complex. The singles and doubles winners automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships at Yale University Nov. 5-8.
