Noles Check In At #20 In USA Today Preseason Poll

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The buzz surrounding the Florida State football team and first-year coach Jimbo Fisher was raised a few decibels Friday, when the Seminoles checked in at No. 20 in the USA Today/Coaches preseason poll.
The Seminoles received 374 points from the panel of 59 voting coaches, which includes Fisher. FSU is one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the poll, trailing Virginia Tech (No. 6), Miami (13), Georgia Tech (17) and North Carolina (18).
Preseason Top 25 appearances have been the norm for the Seminoles, who have earned a spot in the preseason coaches' poll 13 of the last 14 years. Fisher, just the ninth coach in the program's 64 seasons of football competition, is the first to have a preseason, nationally-ranked team heading into his inaugural season.
Florida State will have every opportunity to improve its standing throughout the 2010 season. Four of its opponents - Oklahoma (No. 8), Miami, North Carolina and Florida (3) - are nationally ranked from the outset. Three others - BYU, Boston College and Clemson - received votes.
The USA Today/Coaches preseason poll could foreshadow a changing of the guard among the nation's elite. While defending national champion Alabama was the runaway No. 1 choice, seven teams - including Florida State - were ranked despite not closing the 2009 season ranked in the Top 25.
Fisher's first team has grabbed a Top 25 ranking in virtually every preseason publication. The Seminoles could add on another on Aug. 21 when the Associated Press preseason poll is released.
