TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Three Florida State women’s tennis players got some excellent experience this weekend as Tallahassee hosted a US Open National Playoffs Qualifier on June 19-22.
Incoming freshman Gabby Castaneda was able to reach the semifinals of the women’s singles draw, redshirt freshman Emily Fanning made the quarterfinals and junior transfer Yukako Noi fell in the Round of 16. Fanning also competed in the mixed doubles draw, reaching the semifinals with partner Parker Evertsen.
“It was great to see some of our team members compete on campus this weekend,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “It was also exciting to have Emily back on court competing as well after missing the entire spring season with an injury that has finally cleared up.
“Having a chance to see both of our newcomers Gabby and Yukako on court as well gets our staff very excited as we look ahead to next year. We will be hosting the ITA Summer Circuit event starting on July 6 and the girls will have another chance to compete.”
Castaneda earned a bye directly to the Round of 16 though her teammates effectively received the same as Noi advanced due to her first round opponent withdrawing and Fanning’s opponent did not show up.
In the Round of 16, newcomers Castaneda and Noi faced off against each other in an exciting three-set match. The freshman Castaneda took the first set by a score of 6-4, but Noi was able to tie the match with a 7-6 (4) win in the second. The decisive third set was tightly contested but Castaneda was able to outlast her teammate and take the match with a 6-4 score.
In the quarterfinals, Castaneda easily handled her opponent, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Brittany Lindl. Castaneda’s tournament came to an end in the semifinals, being defeated by Liz Jeukeng 6-4, 6-1.
Fanning needed to come from behind to defeat her Round of 16 opponent. The New Zealand native dropped the opening set 4-6, but was able to refocus and play confident tennis and easily took the next two sets and the match by identical 6-1 scores. Fanning would fall in the quarterfinals to Liz Jeukeng in a competitive three-setter, 6-0, 6-7 (2), 6-2.
In mixed doubles, Fanning and Evertsen won their first match, 6-4, 6-3, over Raul Mena and Genevieve Lorbergs in the Round 16. They moved to the semifinals as their next opponents withdrew due to injury but lost in that round to William M. Federhofer and Brittany Dubins by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
