ORLANDO, Fla. – After a weekend full of inclement weather that affected most of the UCF Tournament, the No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team was able to close out its final event before dual-match play with a 4-3 doubles record and a 10-4 singles mark.
“We needed this weekend to get some good matches under our belts as we head in to the upcoming dual match season,” FSU Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “More important than anything is that everyone got better as the weekend progressed. We competed hard and had many good things to take away from the weekend. We are looking forward to a solid week of practice to prepare for our home opener against USF next Saturday.”
FSU opened the morning in two doubles matches against Illinois in which it saw juniors Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) earning their third doubles win of the weekend over Megan Fudge and Breanne Smutko 8-4.
On the singles front, the Seminoles blew the competition away by posting an impressive 4-1 record for the day. Senior Lauren McCreless (Ogden, Utah), ranked No. 23, conquered Andrea Yacaman of UCF 6-0, 6-0, while No. 62 Francesca Segarelli (Rome, Italy) marked her 6-2, 6-1 win over Allison Hodges (UCF). In spite of losing yesterday, Rybakova was able to bounce back with a victory over Alexis Rodriguez with Suess also taking care of business on her court with a triumph over Katie Orletsky of UCF 6-4, 6-2.
“At this point, we have some very specific things we must focus on, beginning with taking care of the small but crucial details and being more disciplined in a few areas,” Coach Hyde. “At this level, the best teams in the country exhibit disciplined executions consistently. We need to stay focused on demanding that discipline on a daily basis so that it becomes habit.”
Up next for Florida State is the team’s first dual match against No. 75 South Florida in Tallahassee at 11 a.m.
