TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team continues to work hard this summer with upcoming sophomores Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and Dominic Cotrone coming in second and third place, respectively, in their own tournaments this week. Upcoming seniors Anderson Reed and Jordan Kelly-Houston have also been traveling the nation.
At the USTA Boys’ 18 National Clay Court Championships hosted by the City of Delray Beach, Cotrone took third place honors in doubles. Cotrone and his partner lost in the semifinals to the No. 9 seed 6-2, 6-2. In the quarterfinals the duo won 7-5, 7-4 after winning 6-3, 7-6 in the round of 16.
Gonzalez Mendez played at the 2012 LX Edición Copa Calleja in his home country of Spain as the No. 8 seed. Starting the tournament in the round of 16, he won 6-2, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, he defeated the No. 2 seed, and No. 42 ranked player in Spain 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. To reach the finals he won 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. In the finals, he lost to the No. 1 seed, and No. 31 ranked player in Spain, Miguel Casal Arantes 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Reed and Kelly-Houston played at the Lewis and Clark Community College USTA Men’s Futures Tennis Tournament in Godfrey, Ill., this past weekend. Reed reached the finals of the singles qualifying while Kelly-Houston reached the third round. Next week the duo heads to the USTA/Ursula Beck Pro Tennis Classic in Decatur, Illinois.
