CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Despite jumping out to a strong start, the No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team (3-2) couldn’t hold off the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (5-0) who defeated the Seminoles 6-1 in the ACC opening road match played at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Florida State started out hot by quickly jumping to a lead in all three matches in doubles, but the Hurricanes quickly turned the momentum into their favor by posting two doubles wins in comeback fashion to take the 1-0 lead into singles. Seniors Katie Rybakova and Federica Suess posted the Seminoles lone doubles victory by defeating Miami’s No. 42 ranked duo of Kayla Rizzolo and Gabriela Mejia 8-4.
The Seminoles nearly captured the point in doubles as the young duo of freshman Ruth Seaborne and sophomore Francesca Segarelli jumped out to an early lead over the No. 46 tandem Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein of the Hurricanes. It would have marked the duo’s second straight victory over a ranked opponent after defeating Auburn’s No. 21 ranked team of Paulina Schippers and Jacqueline Kasler 8-2 on Friday. It looked like that was the case after jumping out to an early lead, but this time they couldn’t quite hold on as they fell 9-7 to the more experienced Hurricanes.
In singles FSU again faced stiff competition as Miami came in with three top 100 players in No. 16 Bianca Eichkorn, No. 98 Anna Bartenstein, and No. 99 Danielle Mills. Sophomore Francesca Segarelli proved why she was the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year as she defeated Mills 6-2, 6-4 for the Seminoles lone point.
The Seminoles will now travel to Atlanta to face the No. 14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on February 26 at 12:00pm before heading back home to face instate rival No. 2 Florida Gators on March 1st at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center at 4:00pm.
