`Noles Fall In ACC Championships

April 21, 2011

CARY, N.C. – The No. 8 Seed Florida State men’s tennis team fell in the first round of the ACC Championships to No. 9 Seed Maryland 4-2 today, April 21. The `Noles played doubles for about 30 minutes before rainfall derailed play for almost two hours. When they returned to the courts they lost the doubles point before winning only two singles matches.

“I think the doubles point was important,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Maryland came out with a lot of energy in doubles. I thought that they were a hungrier team and wanted it more.”

In singles play No. 26 senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) posted the first win for the Seminoles defeating No. 106 Maros Horny 6-2, 6-1. This win marked his 16th win in dual match play and ninth ACC match of the year.

The next match off the courts was No. 99 Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) who was defeated by John Collins on court two 7-5, 6-2. This gave Maryland the 2-1 lead.

On court four, sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) nabbed his fifth straight match and his eighth ACC win of the season. He defeated Tommy Laine 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2.

“Jordan has been on a nice run lately and Vahid has had a phenomenal year,” continued Hultquist. “He really needs to be considered for ACC player of the year after the season he has had.”

With three matches left on the court, sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) both lost only moments after one another for Maryland to clinch the match. Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) was winning his match 6-3, 5-4 when the match was called.

“We made a nice little run in the beginning of singles,” finished Hultquist. “I thought the key part was Andres and Anderson not coming out with wins in their first sets. They were up and if we would have won five first sets, we would have controlled the match.”

The Seminoles now await their fate about the team NCAA Team Championships and the Singles and Doubles NCAA Championships.
