GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No.36 ranked Florida State women’s tennis team fell to the No.31 Washington State 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Pavilion in Gainesville, Fla.
The Seminoles fell into a 1-0 hole as they dropped the doubles point. Junior Francesca Segarelli and freshman Mia Vriens lost to Elisabeth Fornuier and Charlotte Koning 8-4 on court three. On court one, juniors Amy Sargeant and Carolina De los Santos fell in a 8-6 battle with Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras on court one.
“That doubles point was a big difference,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “We didn’t maintain control on two of those courts and it was pretty costly. We are pretty disappointed to finish our season like this, but give credit to Washington State. They fought hard.”
Segarelli would tie the match at one for Florida State as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court three against Googe.
Vriens earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court four as she defeated Kankaras in order to give the Seminoles the 2-1 lead in the match.
De Los Santos would earn her 18th victory of the spring as she defeated Luzina on court five 6-0, 6-2, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Seminoles with three courts still in play. At this point, Florida State had lost three first sets on those courts.
The Cougars would snatch two quick points in order to tie the score 3-3 as sophomore Ruth Seaborne fell to Fourier 6-3, 6-3 on court two. Minutes later, Freshman Leyla Erkan fell to Liudimilla on court one, 6-4, 6-2, leaving the dual on court six to decide the match.
Despite several rallies in both sets, Sargeant fell to Koning on court six, 7-5, 6-4 to give Washington State the 4-3 win. The Cougars will advance to the second round to play the winner of No. 2 ranked Florida and South Carolina State.
