CARY, N.C.- The No.32 Florida State women’s tennis team fell to the No.8 North Carolina in a tough fought match 4-2 at the 2012 ACC Championships in Cary, N.C.
“It was a battle out there today,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “I was very proud of the fight the girls had. We knew it was going to be a dog fight with UNC, as it is on every occasion when we play. They were just a little bit better than we were today, but our team certainly did not go down easily or quietly.”
The Seminoles would lose the doubles point as freshmen Leyla Erkan and Mia Vriens fell to No.3 Shinnann Featherston and Lauren McHale 8-1 on court two. Juniors Francesca Segarelli and Carolina De los Santos lost to Gina Suaerz-Malaguti 8-4 on court three, giving the Tar Heels the 1-0 advantage.
In singles, UNC would extend their lead to 2-0 as Vriens fell to Suarez-Malaguti, 6-2, 6-2 on court four, however De Los Santos wrapped up her match on court six with a victory against Haley Hemm, 6-4, 6-4. With that win, she pulled the Seminoles to within one at 2-1.
On court one, Seaborne fell to No. 37 Zoe De Bryucker, 6-3, 7-5, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Tar Heels.
Although the Seminoles were on the brink of elimination on multiple courts, Sargeant fought back in the second set to force a third on court five and Erkan fought off a 4-1 hole in the second set to win it in tiebreak points in order to force a third set on court two, keeping Florida State alive.
With both courts still battling, the Seminoles would fall to the Tar Heels 4-2 after Erkan lost her match to No.97 Featherston 7-6, 6-7, 6-1.
“I’m proud of this team, I’m proud of what they have accomplished so far this season, and I am more excited than ever about what is ahead for them,” Hyde said. “We have improved in so many ways this season and kudos to this team for getting better and hanging with the adversity that has come our way. We have no reason to hang our heads as we leave the ACC Championships, and after a few days to rest minds and bodies, we will set our focus on the NCAA Tournament.”
Florida State will await their fate for the NCAA Tournament which is scheduled to begin on May 10. Check back to Seminoles.com and Twitter for more information.
