DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Alana Beard scored 22 points to become the 15th Duke
woman with 1,000 career points as the No. 5 Blue Devils beat Florida State
88-55 Thursday night for their 14th straight victory.
Wynter Whitely scored 19 points in reserve, Iciss Tillis added 14, and
Michele Matyasovsky 13 as Duke (23-3) moved within one game of being the first
team since 1995 to go 16-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Virginia is the only team to finish 16-0 in the league.
Florida State (4-11, 13-13 ACC) lost its third straight and its seventh in
nine games despite a career-high 22 points from reserve Linnea Liljestrand. She
was 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
The Seminoles made just 18 of 70 shots from the field, including
Liljestrand’s 6-for-12 shooting.
Krista Gingrich, the lone Duke senior in the Blue Devils’ last
regular-season home game, scored her only two points on a jumper at the
first-half horn to give Duke a 47-29 advantage.
Duke pulled away in the second half, taking its biggest lead 85-46 on a hook
by Matyasovsky with 3:30 left.
Beard made five of her first eight shots and had 13 points in the opening
Paced by Beard, Duke shot 65.5 percent (21-of-32) in the opening half.
Florida State made just 10 of its first 34 shots (29.4 percent). The Blue
Devils ended up hitting 36 of 63 for the game (57.1 percent).
