TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With a 9-3 day, the Florida State men’s tennis team continued perform strong at the Seminole Invitational. Florida State went 3-0 in doubles today to have three of the four pairs in the semifinals of doubles. In singles play, two Noles will play in the A and B draw championship matches.

The day started out with the quarterfinals of the A and B Singles Draws. Florida State went 4-1 with senior Jason Zafiros (Bradenton, Fla.) defeating Levan Clark of Florida A&M 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4. Junior Anderson Reed (Daphne, Fla.) only dropped two games as he went on to win 6-2, 6-0 over Chris Helliar of UAB. Closing out the A Draw was junior Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) as he faced Norbert Nemcsek of UNF. After not dropping a game in the first set, Bucaro lost the first three games of the second. He fought back to win the match 6-0, 7-6(3).

In the semifinals of the A Draw, Zafiros and Reed faced a unique situation by playing one another. The match went back-in-forth but Zafiros came out on the winning end, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to advance to tomorrow’s finals match. Zafiros will face Salif Kante of Florida A&M who defeated Bucaro 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(6).

In the B Draw, redshirt-sophomore Brian Alden (Barrington, Ill.) went 2-0 on the day with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win in the quarterfinals against Micharl Elortegui of USM. In the semifinals, he defeated Lucas Dirube of UAB in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Tomorrow morning he will face off against Blake Gregor of South Alabama.

The Noles were strong in doubles today as the team went undefeated in the quarterfinals. Bucaro and sophomore Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) did not drop a game as they defeated Nemcsek and Timo Kranz of North Florida 8-0. Freshman Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) and Reed faced Jose Fantova and Larry Condez of Jacksonville and won 9-7. Zafiros and Alden posted an 8-4 win over Beau Treyz and Julain Belair of UNF.

Tomorrow’s semifinal doubles matches will begin after the 9:30 a.m. singles matches. All matches will be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Courts.
