Durham, N.C. – The FSU women’s tennis team will open ACC competition in North Carolina this weekend for a pair of matches against Top 10 opponents at No. 9 Duke and No. 6 North Carolina. Florida State is looking for its first victory over both schools since the 2011 season.
The Seminoles are led at the top of the lineup by a pair of seniors, Daneika Borthwick and Yukako Noi. The two are a combined 10-3 in singles play this spring, while Borthwick’s 71 career singles wins is eight shy of breaking into the Top 10 all-time at FSU.
Against Duke (Friday, 5:00 p.m.), the Seminoles will face its first Top 10 opponent of the season. Florida State played in Durham earlier this year for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, but did not face the Blue Devils. Duke is led by two Top 30 players in Beatrice Capra (26) and Kaitlyn McCarthy (28). Capra and Ellyse Hamlin are the 17th-ranked doubles team.
Last season, No. 24 Duke won 4-0 in Tallahassee.
North Carolina reached No. 2 in the country before recently slipping to No. 6. The match in Chapel Hill is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Tar Heels feature the No. 2 singles player in the country, Hayley Carter, and the top-ranked doubles tandem in Carter and Whitney Kay.
Florida State sophomore Gabriella Castaneda and junior Daniela Schippers picked up wins over a pair of ranked players in the Tar Heels 5-2 win last season in Tallahassee.
