TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State swimming and diving team lost its first dual meet of the season falling to LSU on Saturday. The men were defeated 155-145, while the women lost 176-124.

“I’m really happy with the way we competed,” head coach Neil Harper said. “It’s always a great challenge to swim at LSU. Even in defeat we definitely became a better team today. For any partial fan it was a great dual meet to watch.”

The Seminole men (3-1), battled the Tigers throughout the day and trailed by only five points heading into the final relay. However, LSU was able to earn a victory in the 400 free relay to pull out the win. In his first collegiate meet of the season senior Rob Holderness wasted no time in dominating the breaststroke events winning both the 100 (55.78) and 200 breast (2:02.90). Junior Mateo DeAngulo also earned a pair of victories in the 500 free (4:30.60) and 1000 free (9:14.78).

“Getting Rob back into it was great,” Harper said. “He came from behind in both races and it’s good to have him back. Mateo and Tyler Sell set the tone and swam really well even while training really hard. They both swam smart tactical races today.”

For the Florida State women (5-1, 1-0), it was junior Stephanie Sarandos who led the way. The honorable mention All-American swept the backstroke events taking first in the 100 (57.02) and 200 (2:00.21). Like the men, the Seminole women also swept the distance events with senior Holly Mills winning the 500 free (4:59.09) and junior Charlotte Broadbent taking the 1000 free (10:13.36).

“I was very proud of our distance girls, they are training hard and again swam smart, not getting caught up in the early pace,” Harper said. “Stephanie has raised her game. She is training exceptionally hard and had a difficult double in this meet and really was great in the 100 back.”

Florida State will take two weeks off from competition before heading to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational beginning on November 19. For a meet results and a recap, log onto www.seminoles.com.
