OLYMPIA, Ill. – The Florida State men’s golf team returned to the course Monday and turned in one of their best scores of the season with a 5-over 285, eight strokes better than Sunday’s first round score. The Seminoles are tied for third after the second round of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational at the Olympia Fields Country Club South Course. The team wraps up the three-round tournament with an 8:50 a.m. tee time on Tuesday.
“We’re getting more and more people playing competitive golf,” said head coach Trey Jones. “The first tournament Chase (Seiffert) was the only one playing well and last week it was Daniel (Berger). This tournament we have three guys who are playing well. We need to have five guys playing well but it’s a good sign for what’s coming. We’re starting to shoot under par and in the 60s today from different guys.”
The team’s best score of the day came from senior Chase Seiffert (Panama City, Fla.) who carded a 2-under 68 with 12 pars and four birdies. Seiffert posted a nine stroke improvement from this first round score. He now sits at 5-over 145 jumping 34 spots to 18th.
Making an eight stroke improvement was freshman Hank Lebioda (Winter Springs, Fla.) who posted a 1-under 69 Monday. After carding a double bogey on hole No. 18 on Sunday, he closed up Monday with a birdie on 18. He is tied for 23rd with a two round total of 6-over 146.
“Chase and Hank were obviously disappointed after the way they played yesterday,” continued Jones. “They are both better than that. It was good to see them come out and turn around their play. We needed that because they ended up being our leaders for the day.”
Still leading the Seminoles is sophomore Daniel Berger (Jupiter, Fla.) who posted a 2-over 72 who had a 12-hole run with 10 pars and two birdies. He sits tied for seventh with a two day total of 2-over 142.
Junior Bjorn Hellgren (Vasteras, Sweden) is tied for 41st after a second round 6-over 76 for a two day total of 10-over 150 while senior Doug Letson (Tampa, Fla.) is tied for 47th with a two round total of 11-over 151.
The Seminoles are part of a 14-team field including No. 2 SMU, No. 4 Florida, No. 13 Northwestern, No. 18 Illinois, No. 19 Clemson, No. 25 Indiana, Arkansas, Auburn, Augusta State, Duke, Oklahoma State, Purdue and Stanford.
