Noles No. 20 in Preseason AP Poll

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The coach has changed but the expectations have not for the Florida State football program, at least not in the eyes of the 60-member Associated Press voting panel.

For the 31st time in the last 33 seasons the Seminoles will begin a season ranked in the AP poll. Florida State collected 379 points and checked in at No. 20 when the poll was released Saturday. The Seminoles are one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams to make a preseason Top 25 appearance. Only the Southeastern Conference, with six teams, has more among Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.

Jimbo Fisher's first FSU team will face a daunting 12-game regular season schedule, which begins Sept. 4 at home against Samford, but will include dates with four teams which earned preseason rankings. That includes trips to No. 7 Oklahoma on Sept. 11 and No. 13 Miami on Oct. 9 and home dates against No. 18 North Carolina (Nov. 6) and No. 4 Florida (No. 27).

Three other teams which received votes - Brigham Young, Clemson and Boston College - are also on the Seminoles' schedule.

It is hardly new ground for the 'Noles, who since 1978 have been excluded from the preseason poll only twice - in 1982 and 2008 - while under the direction of legendary coach Bobby Bowden. Prior to Bowden's arrival for the start of the 1976 season, the Seminoles had earned just one preseason ranking - No. 19 in 1972 - coming off an 8-4 season under the direction of Larry Jones.

Fisher is the ninth head coach in the program's history, which begins its 64th season of competition in two weeks. Earlier this month the Seminoles checked in at No. 20 in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll, which comprises one component of the Bowl Championship Series national championship selection process.
