Noles Partnering with Girls on the Run

This season the Florida State University Women’s Basketball Team is set to EMERGE on and off the court as women of character and influential members of the community. They are teaming up with Girls on the Run of the Big Bend as they look to cheer on and help young girls in the Tallahassee area run their first 5K.

“I can speak for the entire Florida State Women’s Basketball program by saying that I’m thrilled to be partnering with Girls on the Run of the Big Bend,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. “Just like we try to inspire our student-athletes to reach their full potential in all areas, Girls on the Run of the Big Bend is a dedicated group that tries to set our youth on the right path. They promote all the right values and educate our children of today through running. Our team cannot wait to cheer them on and see the enormous benefits of working with such a fantastic group.”

The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Ericka McKibbin, Executive Director for Girls on the Run (GOTR) of the Big Bend, believes it is critical to build strong girls who believe in themselves, value friendship and understand the importance of giving back to their community. On a personal level, the program brings focus on ‘girl power’ and the positive role that fitness/running can play in bringing confidence, joy and strength. Over 100 girls are training this season on five teams at local schools across Leon County.

“It is so fitting that we launch our partnership with the FSU Women’s Basketball team on the National Girls on the Run (GOTR) Spirit Day,” said Ericka McKibbin. “We are bringing our team of girls and the FSU Women Basketball team together to #beMORE. The mission of both of our teams is to inspire our female athletes to be more in the classroom, in the community, and in our respective sports. This is a wonderful opportunity for our girls to connect with strong role models who demonstrate and live our GOTR values of empowerment, fitness, and service. We are excited to see what emerges and grows through this partnership.”

Florida State Women’s Basketball is a program dedicated toward enriching the lives of others through community service and charitable endeavors. While the focus of attaining success on the court is always important, the Seminoles show just as much devotion toward helping out those in the Tallahassee community. Some of their recent work around the Big Bend area includes visiting community centers, talking to children at elementary schools, cheering on participants at local races, visiting hospitals and much more.

Throughout the season the Florida State Women’s Basketball team will team up with GOTR in several community service projects to make a difference in the local area. The team is also set to cheer on the runners as they compete in their first ever 5K race on Saturday, Dec. 6, on the Florida State University Campus.
