TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three Florida State hitters, including Hayden Kelly, Darren Miller and Steven Wells Jr., collected two RBIs as the Seminoles posted an 11-2 victory in the series finale over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
Miller, who finished 1-for-2 at the plate, highlighted a three-run fifth inning when he sent a single up the middle to score Dylan Busby and Gage West. Wells, who came off the bench for head coach Mike Martin, roped a double to left field that scored Dylan Busby and Jackson Lueck as part of a four-run seventh inning for Florida State.
Kelly, who took over third base duties from John Sansone in the seventh, made his impact felt immediately with a single into centerfield which plated both Donovan Petrey and Wells.
Starting pitcher Cole Sands, who moved to 2-0 on the season, went five innings, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out one batter. He was followed on the mound by the committee of Alec Byrd, Cobi Johnson, Will Zirzow and Chase Haney. The relievers combined for four strikeouts, allowed one hit, one run and two walks as Florida State moved to 5-1 on the season.
“It feels very good to see that last column (errors) with a zero in it and to watch a team get an opportunity to blow the game open and take advantage of it,” said Martin. “I am very pleased with the way that we got after it today.”
Florida State grabbed the lead in the first inning due in large part to back-to-back singles by Taylor Walls and Matt Henderson. With one out on a double steal, Walls crossed the plate for the first run and Henderson reached third on a muffed throw to home. Henderson eventually scored on a fielding error with Gage West at the plate and Cal Raleigh tallied the final run of the inning on a wild pitch as the Seminoles grabbed the 3-0 advantage.
College of Charleston cut the deficit to two, following a solo home run to left field by Bradley Jones, but a three-run inning by Florida State pushed the lead to 6-1.
The second three-run affair took place in the fifth when CofC starting pitcher Hayden McCutcheon made an errant throw to first, allowing Sansone to advance to third. Raleigh lined a hit off McCutcheon’s foot, scoring Sansone for the 4-1 lead. Three batters later, with both Dylan Busby and West in scoring position, following a double steal, Miller cracked a single up the middle to push the lead to five.
McCutcheon (1-1) took the loss for the Cougars (3-3) after surrendering four runs, two earned, three hits in four innings. College of Charleston was led at the plate by Jones, who finished the game by going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.
The Seminoles host their first mid-week games of the season when they welcome Jacksonville (March 1) and Villanova (March 2). Florida State will send Tyler Holton to the mound for his first start on Tuesday.
