TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After an impressive weekend showing at the New Mexico State Tournament, the Florida State volleyball team has been ranked No. 22 in this week’s AVCA Division I Coaches Poll.
FSU’s No. 22 ranking marks the first time that the program has been placed in the top 25 of volleyball teams in the country since the 1998 season when the Seminoles were ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
“This is a huge honor for our team and coaching staff,” FSU head coach Chris Poole said. “We came to Florida State just one year ago with the goal of eventually building a top-25-level program. The girls have worked extremely hard the past year. It wasn’t easy to change habits, but they have been very open-minded and continue to trust us.”
Florida State is coming off an impressive three matches last week when the team took No. 4 Florida to match-point in the fifth set in Gainesville, Fla.
FSU then followed up that performance by sweeping both No. 8-ranked Illinois and New Mexico State in the Aggies’ home tournament in Las Cruces, NM. The ‘Noles also swept the Italian National Team in an exhibition match.
At 5-1 on the season, FSU is off to its best start since the 2000 campaign when the team started 7-0.
“Our start is amazing when you consider that we still do not have Lauren Richardson, our MVP from the 2008 season,” Poole said. “I’m really proud of the way the girls have stepped up and met the challenge on and off the court. We realize this is still early and we have a lot of work to accomplish, but it is nice to see our program being recognized.
“If we can remain healthy, we will continue to improve as the season progresses.”
Florida State will be looking to build on to its new ranking this weekend as the Seminoles travel south to take part in the FIU/Miami Tournament.
