TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State men’s tennis (16-8, 7-4) enters the ACC Championships as the No. 5 seed of the tournament on Thursday, April 19. The Seminoles will be squaring off against instate rival No. 12 seed Miami (8-12, 1-10) at noon. The tournament runs through Sunday, April 22. The winner of Thursday’s match will face off against No. 4 seed Virginia Tech.
“This year’s ACCs is one of those years that so many teams are evenly balanced,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “To do well at this year we need to have a lot of people contribute. This is a year that having a lot of depth is to our advantage.”
The two teams met earlier in the season with Florida State gaining the 6-1 win. Florida State has only played Miami once at the ACC Championships; Miami came away with the 4-3 win in 2008. If Florida State advances to the quarterfinals, it will be the first time the two teams meet at the tournament.
“Miami is a very tough first round,” continued Hultquist. “We had a very tight match against this earlier in the year. They lost some close ones in conference. They have a very good team and program.”
This season six of the eight members of the squad have a winning record in ACC play this season. Freshman Benjamin Lock has an 8-1 record while junior Andres Bucaro is 8-2. Freshman Dominic Cotrone is 3-0 while senior Jason Zafiros is 5-3. Sophomore Blake Davis is 6-5 while freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez is 5-4.
