Durham, N.C. (Tallahassee, Fla.) –After knocking off a pair of ranked teams to open the 2016 season last week, the FSU women’s tennis team is again on the road to face a pair of ranked foes. The Seminoles will face No. 29 Mississippi State Friday at 10:00 a.m. to open the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, and will face either No. 16 Duke or No. 67 Portland in Saturday’s final.
The format for Saturday will pit the winners of the first two matches against each other, while the losers will play a consolation match earlier in the day. The school that wins both matches will advance to the National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., on February 4.
Last week, FSU traveled to No. 57 Old Dominion and No. 65 Tulane to open the season, recording wins at each stop. The 5-2 win over Old Dominion on Saturday and 6-1 win at Tulane were a total team effort, with every player recording at least one singles or doubles win on the weekend. The Noles moved to No. 36 in the ITA rankings, up one spot from last week.
Friday’s match against Mississippi State will be the first against the Bulldogs since 1994. Florida State leads the all-time series, 4-3. FSU has an all-time 5-28 record against Duke, and has never faced Portland.
Last year in the ITA Kick-Off, the Seminoles beat USF in the first match before falling at host Miami. This is the first of four trips FSU will take to the Tar Heel State this season.
