BATON ROUGE, La. – The Florida State Beach Volleyball team got back in the win column on Saturday picking up two wins at the LSU Beach Invitational in Baton Rouge. The Noles began the day with a 4-1 victory over No. 10 Grand Canyon before closing out the afternoon with a 5-0 blanking over 12th-ranked LSU. Facing Grand Canyon for the second time this year, Florida State earned a hard fought victory on Saturday as three of the five matches against the Lopes went the distance.
Hailey Luke and Nikki Esposito got the Noles off to a fast start with a straight victory on court five. Then Macy Jerger and Annie Montgomery extended the Seminole lead to 2-0 after earning a three-set victory over Brooke Razo and Kami Anderson on court four.
Vanessa Freire and Sierra Sanchez clinched the match for FSU with a straight set victory on court three, while the last two courts were decided in three sets. Kristina Pellitteri and Victoria Paranagua bounced back after dropping the first set (17-21) to take sets two and three – 21-19, 15-10. Jace Pardon and Julie Brown saw their five-game match win streak come to an end on court one falling to GCU’s Mackenzie Phelps and Shannon Dugan, 19-21, 21-14, 12-15.
The Seminoles dominated their final match of the afternoon against LSU winning in straight sets on all five courts. FSU’s first three positions had no trouble with the Tigers as Brown/Pardon, Pellitteri/Paranagua and Freire/Sanchez were all victories in the night cap.
The duo of Jerger/Esposito teamed up for the first time this year and defeated LSU’s Riley Young and Callan Molle, 21-13, 21-17, on court four. Montgomery and Kayla Joyce made short work of their match on court five winning, 21-13, 21-11.
Ali Eager and Meghan Conway earned a pair of victories in the exhibition matches defeating Grand Canyon’s Brandy Grant/Kelli Iverson, 21-17, 21-11 and then LSU’s Carly Morris and Roxanne McVey, 21-19, 21-17.
The two wins for FSU on Saturday moved the third-ranked Seminoles to 16-1 on the year including a mark of 10-1 against ranked opponents.
The Seminoles will remain in Baton Rouge for one more day as Florida State, LSU and Grand Canyon will compete in a pairs tournament beginning at 9:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
