`Noles Stop The Wolfpack 6-1

April 1, 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. – There was no fooling the Seminoles today as the team stopped the Wolfpack with a 6-1 win on Friday, April 1. The No. 47 Florida State men’s tennis team (7-10, 2-4) went out and swept doubles then proceeded to win five of the six singles matches against No. 59 NC State (8-10, 0-6) at Pullen Park as each `Nole posted a win.

“The match could have gotten close, both teams won three first sets,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Anderson did a good job in closing his match out as well as Vahid. They got up a set and then got up a break and closed it out. Blake was at 4-4 in the second set, broke serve then served it out very confidently and got us the win. I think it helped him a lot that Connor and Clint made good comebacks in the second set.”

After dropping both of their first sets in singles, both senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) fought back and won their second sets to force a third set tiebreaker. Both `Noles came out victorious in the third set to clinch their matches.

No. 91 Bowles defeated Jamie Pulgar on court two 2-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-8) while Smith won 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) on court four against Sanchez Gomez.

“Those were great wins as Clint was down 4-1 and Connor was down 3-0 in the second set,” continued Hultquist. “When they came back and pushed it into three sets, it made it easier for Blake to finish it off and clinch the match.”

Clinching the match, freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) played on court three against Rafael Paez and won 6-2, 6-4.

No. 24 senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) defeated Dominic Hodgon 6-2, 6-3 on court one while Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) topped Matt Thomson on court six 6-4, 6-3.

The team had a solid effort in doubles as the Seminoles got broke only once to sweep doubles for the fifth time this season. The No. 12 duo of Mirzadeh and Smith grabbed their 13th win of the season with an 8-6 win over Hodgson and Lowe on court one.

On court two, sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Reed continued to play strong together as they won their 11th match 8-4 over Sullivan and M. Thomson. Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Davis are now 3-1 after an 8-5 win on court three against Pulgar and D. Thomson.

The team travels to No. 39 Wake Forest on Sunday at noon. Check back on Seminoles.com for results.
