NEW ORLEANS –
A day after being ranked in the top three in their regions the Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams were both ranked in the initial top 25 poll released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday. The women checked in at No. 3, while the men are ranked 23rd.
The women finished third for the second consecutive season in 2008 and will look to improve on that finish this fall as the Seminoles return one of the top runners in the country in Susan Kuijken who earned a second place finish individually. Fellow All-American Pilar McShine returns as well to anchor a strong top two for Florida State who will likely see immediate contributions from transfer Pasca Cheruiyot. The Seminoles are the top Atlantic Coast Conference school in the poll ranking ahead of Virginia (No. 18) and Duke (No. 30).
The men enter the initial top 25 poll at No. 23, three spots ahead of where they finished at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Senior Daniel Roberts will lead the Seminoles into action, along with junior Matt Leeder and transfer Ciaran O’Lionard. The Seminoles are joined in the top 25 poll by fellow ACC members Virginia (No. 14) and NC State (No. 19).
The first week of the USTFCCCA Top 25 poll will be released Sept. 29, with the first regional rankings coming out the day before.
