TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 18 Florida State women’s tennis team defeated the University of North Florida today, 5-0 to move to 3-1 overall on the season at both the Scott Speicher Tennis Center and the Indoor Tennis Facility.

“It was a good contest today,” Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “North Florida is as good as they’ve ever been since I’ve been coaching here at FSU and they gave us a good match. We had to overcome adversity on each of our courts.”

Starting at Speicher in doubles t, Junior Francesca Segarelli and sophomore Ruth Seaborne rolled to their fourth win on the season as they defeated the team of Rebeca Pereira and Danielle Day 8-3.

The battle for the doubles points was on the first court. After coming out to a slow start, juniors Carolina De los Santos and Amy Sargeant defeated Aline Berkenbrock and Lorena Aviles in a tiebreak 9-8 (7-4).

Play was stopped shortly after the start of singles and was moved into the Indoor Tennis Facility due to weather.

De Los Santos wasted no time as she took her match against Marina Cunningham in the fifth position 6-1,6-2 to move to 4-0 in singles on the season.

“Carolina continues to roll,” Hyde stated. “she’s playing some good physical tennis and she’s starting to work something.”

Redshirt junior Noemie Scharle grabbed her second win of the season as she beat Simona Weymar, 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth position.

“Noemie is starting to find her role again,” Hyde said. “She’s getting that confidence back and that’s a fun process to see her go through.”

Sargeant secured the match for the Seminoles as she beat Melanie Agurrie, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 out of the number six spot.

“She clinched that fourth point down there after having a slow start in the first set,” Hyde said. “Coming back winning the second set and handling the third.”

After being down 5-1 in the second set, Erkan rallied to finish out her match against Danielle Day in the third spot, 6-2, 7-6. She is also has a 4-0 record this season in singles.

“I was really proud of Leyla,” Coach Hyde said. “She was down 1-5 in the second set and found a way to fight back to clinch her match 7-6. She has a lot of guts and willingness to hang in there and to fight herself out of a hole and that’s something you can’t coach. It’s something you have in your heart or you don’t and I was so pleased to see her effort with that.”

The Seminoles are back in action as they are set to play Florida International at 11 am on Saturday Feb.4. Times and locations of matches are subject to change.
