Noles Tied For 2nd At ACC’s

April 15, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Senior Macarena Silva and sophomore Jessica Negron are in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings and the No. 29 Florida State women’s golf team is in a tie for second place in the team standings after the first round of the 23rd Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf Tournament at the Sedgefield Country Club. The Seminoles are ahead of both No. 15 Duke (fifth place) and No. 16 Wake Forest (fourth place) and are tied with No. 6 Virginia.

Florida State made up a tremendous amount of ground on the field as each of the four Seminole who had their scores counted for the round – Sliva, Negron and junior Hannah Thomson and Maria Salinas – all earned birdies on the 18th hole and final hole of the day. Their efforts and score on the last hole allowed the Seminoles to move from fifth place in the standings into a tie for second – where they will begin play in Saturday’s second round.

No. 23 ranked North Carolina is the team leader after the first 18 of 54 holes of the tournament which will determine the automatic qualifier from the ACC to the NCAA Championship May 17-20 in College Station, Tex. The Tar Heels have a five stroke lead over Florida State and Virginia. Allie White of North Carolina is the individual leader after shooting a five under par score of 66. She was the only golfer to shoot below par and one of only five golfers to shoot at or below par in the first round.

“We didn’t get off to the best of starts today but the girls fought back,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We are in a good position but we have to keep playing the course. We did what we wanted to do on the first day – give ourselves an opportunity to be in the race over the final two days. The rest of the weekend should be a lot of fun because there are so many great teams here.”

Silva (Santiago, Chile) played her best round of golf since Feb. 28 as she carded a two over par score of 73. She was very consistent throughout the round with 14 holes at par or better and two birdies. Silva birdied both the ninth and 18th holes finish at two over par.

“I hit the ball really well today and I am excited about how the round went for me and my teammates,” said Silva. “Many of my putts didn’t fall today but I feel good for tomorrow.”

Silva, who finished in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings in the 2009 ACC Championship, is looking for her fourth consecutive top 15 finish in this event. She finished in a tie for ninth as a freshman, in a tie for 10th as a sophomore and in a tie for 12th as a junior.

Negron (Ocala, Fla.) also played her best round of golf since Feb. 28 as she carded a two over par 73. She was two under par over her final 10 holes with eight holes at par and two birdies. Negron averted a tough round with strong play on her back nine after she finished her front nine with four bogeys and a four over par total. She is looking for her second top 10 finish of the season after finishing in a tie for 10th at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge.

Junior Hannah Thomson (Perth, Australia) finished the first round with a two over par score of 74. She birdied three of the last four holes of the afternoon to finish as close to par as she had been during most of the first round. Thomson was as many as five strokes over par before finishing the round with a flurry of birdies. She birdied the par five 15th hole, the par three 16th and the par five 18th holes.

Thomson is looking for her fourth consecutive top 20 finish and her third top 10 finish in her last five events. She finished in first place in the individual standings at the Lady Gator Invitational in March for the first individual victory of her career.

Junior Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) counted her score of 75 in the Seminoles’ team total. She finished with 13 holes at par or better with one birdie – the favored 18th hole – which allowed Florida State to move into second place in the team standings.

Live scoring of the tournament will be on Golfstat.com. Live webstreaming will be available for free on Saturday, April 16 starting at 1:30 p.m. until the conclusion of play and Sunday, April 17 from 1:30 p.m. until the conclusion of play on theACC.com.
