TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 31 Florida State men’s tennis team (13-4) is currently in first place in the ACC and looks to extend their lead with two home matches this weekend. At 4:00 p.m. Friday, the Noles will face off against Wake Forest (9-8, 0-2) and then will take on No. 33 NC State (14-4, 0-2) at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
“We’ve had a good year so far being 13-4 but we have a long way to go,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We’ve got a lot of big matches ahead. In the ACC we certainly want to end on the higher end of that. We want to set ourselves up for the ACC and NCAA Tournament.”
Florida State holds a 19-9 edge over Wake Forest but the Demon Deacons have won the past three matches between the two teams. Against NC State, Florida State has a 14-4 advantage and has won the past six meetings. For NC State, Jaime Pulgar is ranked No. 66 in the nation.
“Wake Forest beat us 4-3 last year,” continued Hultquist.” They have a good team and very competitive. We know that they are playing for a lot and expect them to come in here fired up and ready to go. NC State’s having one of the best years they’ve ever had having won 14 matches. They’ve shown they are one of the better teams in the ACC.”
The Seminoles are playing strong doubles having won 14 doubles points out of 17 this season. Junior Andres Bucaro and freshman Benjamin Lock have a 13-3 doubles record while junior Anderson Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone are right behind with a 12-4 record. Every doubles team has a winning record this spring.
Not only does every doubles team have a winning record, but every player has a winning singles record as well this spring. Bucaro is undefeated this spring with a 14-0 record. He is 24-4 for the year which means he is only three wins away from entering the record books for single season wins. His .857 winning percentage is currently seventh in single season win percentage at Florida State.
Sophomore Blake Davis has a 12-6 record this spring while Reed is 9-1. Freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and junior Jordan Kelly-Houston each have 9-7 records while senior Jason Zafiros is 9-3. Lock is 6-2 while Cotrone is 4-1.
