TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – This Saturday, February 4, the No. 35 Florida State men’s tennis team (7-1) will face No. 53 USF (0-3) at 1:00 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles are 56-16 at home since 2007 and look to use this to their advantage on Saturday against their instate rival.
“We have nine more home matches and we want to build our fan base to get more and more people to cheer and support us,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Hopefully its nice weather and we have a big crowd to get people behind us.”
The Seminoles hold and all-time 23-20 record against USF in a series that dates back to 1969. The teams met last season with USF coming away with a 6-1 victory. The lone Seminole to get a win last year was sophomore Blake Davis.
The Bulls are a familiar foe playing them in two tournaments in the fall and last season. Davis and freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez are the only Seminoles to not have a loss against the Bulls. While Gonzalez Mendez is only 1-0 from fall play, Davis is 4-0 against USF the past two seasons.
Florida State is currently in the midst of one of the best starts in program history. The Noles won seven straight matches before getting their first loss of the season. The last time a team opened with a streak that long was in 1998 when the team started 8-0.
“I was pleased with practice with the fact we got at it,” continued Hultquist. “We played a good match against Baylor, we didn’t win but we played well. One of things we’ve stressed is try to play well every day and to play hard to let people know what they’re going to get when they play us.”
Senior Jason Zafiros and junior Andres Bucaro are both 6-0 on the season while junior Anderson Reed and freshman Benjamin Lock are 4-0 in singles play. In doubles play, Bucaro and Lock have teamed up for a 7-0 record while Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone are 6-1. Davis and junior Jordan Kelly-Houston are 5-1 on the season.
All matches are played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center unless weather forces the matches to be played at the Indoor Tennis Facility located next to the Seminole Golf Course.
