Noles to Participate in USA Volleyball Tryout

Feb. 20, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  – Five members of the Florida State indoor volleyball team will head to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Spring, Colo. to participate in the U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts which run from Feb. 21-23.

Katie Mosher, Sarah Wickstrom, Mara Green, Nicole Walch along with newcomer Mercedes Vaughn will battle among the 248 players for spots on the national team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams. Former Seminole Elise Walch will also be competing at the event.

“We have six players attending the National Team try-outs this year,” head coach Chris Poole said. “Players from all over the nation go to this try-out and it is something that most every player will look forward to each year.  It’s a chance to see how you can match up to the best in the nation.”

All six ladies will be evaluated for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program.

According to USA Volleyball, the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program has two different options if selected. USA Volleyball will have one U.S. Collegiate National Team of 12 athletes and two coaches travel to China June 13-27, 2014, for a series of training sessions and matches in conjunction with a separate team representing the PAC 12 Conference.

The second option for the selected U.S. Collegiate National Team is training and participation at the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Minneapolis. A projected 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program with training beginning on June 22, 2014, followed by the competition portion June 26-30. U.S. Collegiate National Teams will compete against each other while serving as inspiration for junior athletes competing in the GJNC on what the next level of competition is like in college.

“There are many different National Team programs that college players can be selected based on this try-out,” Poole said. Those programs are run during the summer and give players a wonderful experience.  We have been fortunate to be well represented over the last few years and I would expect us to have players in the running again.”

The event will be live streamed throughout the duration.

FSU will also host Florida in an exhibition on March 21. For more information visit Twitter and Facebook.
