TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 42 Florida State men’s tennis team continued their winning ways today with a 5-2 win over No. 37 Rice in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Seminoles have started the season 7-0 for the first time since 1998. The team is now 56-3 in singles and doubles this season. Tomorrow Florida State will face No. 8 Baylor for a chance to advance to the ITA Indoor Team Championships at the University of Virginia.
In doubles play the Seminoles got to a strong start with junior Anderson Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone defeating Justin To and Harry Fowler 8-1 on court two. Junior Andres Bucaro and freshman Benjamin Lock clinched the doubles point by shutting out Leif Berger and Peter Frank 8-0 on court three.
“After playing excellent doubles and finishing quickly, the key to the match was winning three first set tiebreakers,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Blake (Davis) was down 4-0 but won 7-4, Andres (Bucaro) won 7-5 and then Anderson (Reed) won 11-9 in the tiebreakers. Once we established winning five first sets, several of the matches came off quickly. I really liked the toughness the team showed playing in cold and windy weather today.”
In singles play, senior Jason Zafiros came off the courts first with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five against Michael Nuesslein. Bucaro came off next against Jonathan Chang with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win on court four. Clinching the match was sophomore Blake Davis on court two. The Austin, Texas, native won 7-6 (4), 6-0 over Frank.
“A lot of my family members were out there today,” said Davis. “It was fun that they got to see me play, and for some of them it was their first time. Getting that quick doubles win gave us momentum going into singles. Playing a team that is talented as Rice and to play on court two in a high stakes match was a cool experience. I got to a slow start in my first set but capitalized at the end. It was fun to get the win and clinch to move on against Baylor.”
The Seminoles closed out the match with Reed defeating Philipp Seifert 7-6 (9), 6-2 on court six. Junior Jordan Kelly-Houston and freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez each dropped their matches in the third set.
Florida State will play No. 8 Baylor tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. Live stats can be found here: http://www.baylorbears.com/sports/m-tennis/livestats.html. Follow the team on twitter at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
