Noles Upset No. 29 Mississippi State, 4-1

Tampa, Fla. – The 31st-ranked FSU men’s tennis team responded from its first loss of the season in resounding fashion Sunday, knocking off No. 29 Mississippi State 4-1 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Seminoles are still undefeated in the doubles point this year, and used wins at the bottom of the ladder to secure the upset.

In doubles, for the fourth time this season, Courts 1 and 3 were the difference for the Noles. Seniors Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez won 6-1, while freshman Aziz Dougaz and senior Michael Rinaldi clinched the match with a 6-4 win on Court 3.

In singles, the Bulldogs took four first sets to put FSU behind the eightball early, but three of the four courts fought to a third set to stretch out the match and eventually fall in the Noles’ favor.

For the second consecutive day, Dougaz and sophomore Terrance Whitehurst won for Seminole points. Dougaz beat Niclas Braun, 6-1, 7-5, while Whitehurst won 6-3, 6-1 in dominant fashion.

After MSU scored its only point of the match in a win on Court 2, Terrell Whitehurst clinched for the Noles with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win on Court 5.

The remaining two matches, Lock on Court 1 and Rinaldi on Court 3, were both in the third set when match was clinched.
