MIAMI LAKES, Fla. –The Florida state women’s golf team won their first tournament of the year today as they captured the team championship at the Ryder-Florida State Championships. The Lady Seminoles came back from eight strokes down at the start of the day to defeat the University of Central Florida by three strokes. The Lady Seminoles fired the second-lowest final round total of day with a 310 and finished the tournament with a three-round total of 926.
Seniors Amy Bond and Amy Spooner led the Lady Seminoles from start to finish. Bond and Spooner both fired final-round 78 to finish tied for ninth at 231. It marked the seventh top 20 finish for Bond in eight events and Spooner’s fourth top 20 finish. Sophomore Louise Wright carded a final-round 77 to finish tied for 13th with two other golfers, while Sarah Capie also recorded a 77 in Sunday’s round. Capie finished tied for 16th at 235. Erika Iding rounded out the scoring for the Lady Seminoles with a 79 in the third round. Iding’s three-round total of 238 tied her for 21st.
The Lady Seminoles finished three strokes better the University of Central Florida and nine strokes ahead of South Florida. The previous best finish for the Lady Seminoles in the 1998-99 season was a tied for second place finish at the Auburn Tiger Invitational and a second-place finish at the Lady Seminole Invitational.
Line Berg of Central Florida led the tournament from start to finish and defeated Marie Pia Castro of Florida Atlantic by four strokes for individual medalist honors. Two golfers finished tied for third.
The Lady Seminoles will have a week off before traveling to the ACC Championships in Greensboro, NC.
