TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis continued to main draw play at the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional presented by Oracle at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday, with three Seminoles advancing the round of 32 in the singles draw and one pair advancing in the doubles draw. Play began at 8:30 a.m. with freshman Rana Roop Singh Bhullar defeating Kennesaw State’s Sam Slade 6-2, 7-6(4) in the qualifying round to earn a berth in the main singles draw.
Six Seminoles would play in the singles draw, beginning with junior Guy Iradukunda notching his first win at the Speicher Center, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(2) over Georgia State’s Sebastian Acuna.
“I was particularly pleased with Guy coming back from match point down to come back and win,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “That was maybe the highlight of the day.”
Junior Terrance Whitehurst defeated Georgia Tech’s Chris Yun 6-2, 6-4 while sophomore Aziz Dougaz defeated Florida’s Maxx Lipman 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
After advancing, Bhullar lost to No. 2-seeded Florida’s Elliott Orkin 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“I really liked how Rana played today. First of all to qualify and make it into the main draw and then to play the No. 2 seed in a very tough match,” Hultquist said. “I thought his effort was great.”
Redshirt junior Lucas Poullain fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to FGCU’s Ezequiel Cerrini, and freshman Alex Knaff showed well in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Georgia’s Emil Reinberg.
In the doubles draw, the time-tested pair of Dougaz and Iradukunda advanced with an 8-5 victory over Miami’s Langmo/Dunlap.
Redshirt junior Jose Gracia and Whitehurst fell to Georgia Tech’s Yun brothers 8-7(4), and the freshman duo of Bhullar/Knaff fell to UF’s Guillin/Madonia 8-3.
The winners of the singles and doubles draws will qualify for the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, will be held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, NY.
