Noles Wrap Up First Day Of Furman Fall Classic

Sept. 25, 2009

Greenville, S.C. – The Florida State women’s tennis team had a good first showing at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C. where the Seminoles were able to defeat three nationally- ranked opponents and post an impressive11-3 singles and 2-2 doubles record. Senior Jessica Sucupira highlighted the day by posting a doubles win that tied her at first on the FSU all-time career doubles wins list. The second day of the tournament kicks off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles.

Guiding the team with a 2-0 performance was No. 93 Lauren McCreless (Macfarlane) in flight four of singles. The senior won her first match against USC’s Josefin Anderson 6-4, 6-1 and went on to overpower Northwestern’s Kate Turvey 6-3, 6-1. McCreless now faces Kata Szekely in the flight championship on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

Also showing her garnet and gold was senior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) battling until the end of the day. After opening her first match with a win over Caroline Magnusson of Clemson 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, Sucupira then battled against North Carolina’s Jocelyn Ffriend in a three-set nail bitter that ended in a triumphant 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 match.

Seminole newcomer Francesca Segareli showed what an important part she will play in Florida State’s success this year as she went undefeated by posting a 2-0 singles record for the day. Segareli first knocked off No. 99 Ina Hadziseljimovic of Clemson 6-2, 6-5, then continued on the warpath to defeat North Carolina’s Gina Suarez 7-6 (5), 6-2. Segareli faces Vanderbilt’s Chelsea Preeg on Sunday morning in the flight championship.

Fellow freshman Amy Sargeant opened up her first match strong with a victory over Hannah Blatt of Vanderbilt 6-4, 6-2, but was unable to keep the momentum going as she fell in her second match again #40 Samantha Murray of Northwestern 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Seminole now has the chance to win third place in her match against Rosalia Alda of Tennessee Sunday morning.

As the lone sophomore on the team, Noemie Scharle showed an notable 6-2, 7-6(6) win in her match against #64 Monica Arguello of Furman. Scharle later lost her second match of the day against No. 1 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Scharle will match up against #9 Josipa Bek of Clemson for third place on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

Junior Katie Rybakova started the day slow with a loss against Tennessee’s Maria Sorbello 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, but was able to regain strength in her next match. Rybakova’s quick turnaround paid off as the Seminole defeated #89 Lauren Lui of Northwestern 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 and will play Lauren Kline on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for fifth place.

Flight six featured No. 82 Federica Suess surpassing Northwestern’s Brittany Wowchuck 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in her first match of the day. The Seminole also had a good showing in her win against Nelly Colkowski 6-4, 6-3.

Highlighting the doubles portion of today was Sucupira alongside Sargeant who won the first doubles match for FSU with an 8-3 victory over Furman’s Betts and Bitetti. Not only did Sucupira earn a win, the Seminole also was able to match FSU’s all-time career doubles win leader, Jessica Balbuena (1999-01), with 73 triumphs. Sucupira needs just one more doubles victory to make her Florida State’s all-time doubles wins leader.

The twosome of Segareli and Bonny Davidson also came out with a win in doubles against Maurice and Mosteller of Furman 9-7.

Although FSU’s two other doubles sets didn’t have the same success in winning both its first matches, Rybakova and Scharle along with Macfarlane and Suess team up tomorrow morning to play in a consolation match starting at 9 a.m.
