TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Fourth-seeded Oklahoma used a four-run sixth inning to rallied past fifth-seeded Rutgers 9-7 in the second round of the NCAA Atlantic II baseball regional in Tallahassee at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night.
Trailing 5-4 entering the sixth, the Sooners (42-18) got a two-run single from Bryan Shacklefor, an RBI base hit by Derek Wathan and also scored on a Scarlet Knights’ error to take the lead for good at 8-5.
Rutgers (33-15) crawled back to within one at 8-7 on a two-run homer by Chris Dorsett in the bottom of the seventh but could not get closer.
Paul McCurtain, the fourth of five Sooner pitchers, gave up the Dorsett home run and four hits in two innings of work but picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season. Richard Park did not allow a run in 2.1 innings of work to earn his fifth save.
Scarlet Knights starter Brian Stegen (7-3) allowed seven runs, six earned, and walked five in 5.2 innings while being tagged with the loss. Rutgers committed four errors in the game and has committed 11 errors in its two games in the regional.
Shackleford, Wathan, Casey Bookout and Harold Betts each had two RBI for the Sooners.
