TALLAHASSEE, FL – Geoff Geary pitched eight strong innings and Oklahoma scored five times in the sixth inning as the fourth-seeded Sooners came from behind to best third-seeded Delaware 6-3 in the first game of the NCAA Atlantic II baseball regional in Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee.
With Delaware leading 2-0 entering the sixth, Oklahoma strung togeher six consectuive hits to open the inning. Ruchard Park’s two-run double gave the Sooners (41-18) the lead for good. Casey Bookout, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, added a run scoring single in the seventh to make it 6-2.
The Fightin’ Blue Hens (43-9) had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Brad Eyman’s two-out double to right field made it 6-3. But Kevin Mench, who entered the tournament with a .464 batting average, 31 home runs, 68 RBI and was named Collegiate Baseball’s national Player of the Year earlier in the week, grounded out to third base with runners on second and third to end the game.
Geary scattered nine hits and struck out nine in eight innings of work to improve to 13-1 on the year. Matt Phillips, who had won 23 consecutive decisions, took the loss for Delaware.
