TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Oklahoma State catcher Jason Jaramillo wasted no time putting the Cowboys ahead with a three-run home run to centerfield in the first inning of Game 3 of the NCAA Division I Baseball Tallahassee Regional. The three runs proved to be all OSU needed as the Cowboys eliminated Bethune-Cookman with a 4-1 win Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium. Cowboy pitcher Thomas Cowley (8-3) recorded a complete game victory with 10 strikeouts.
With the win, OSU improved to 38-23 and advanced to Game 5 to be played Saturday night at 7 p.m. vs. the loser between Game 4 teams Florida State and UCF. Bethune-Cookman finished its season with a final record of 27-28.
With one out in the first, OSU designated hitter Ty Wright singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Third basemen Josh Fields followed with a single up the middle setting up Jaramillo’s three-run blast. The Cowboys had four of their eight hits in the inning.
The Wildcats didn’t have a hit until the fifth inning when they recorded their only two of the game. Left fielder Roberto Rodriguez led off the inning with a double to right center and designated hitter Jon Roberts advanced him to third with a bunt single. With one out, Rodriguez scored on a ground out by second baseman Luis Turmero.
The Cowboys picked up an insurance run in the seventh inning thanks to a couple of Bethune-Cookman mistakes. OSU leadoff hitter Rusty Ryal reached on fielding error by the BCC shortstop to get things started. He was sacrificed to second and reached third on a fly out. A wild pitch by BCC pitcher Jahsan Page brought Ryal home.
Page got the loss and finished the 2004 season with a 6-4 record. Fields had two hits for OSU.
