On The Practice Range With Florida State’s Whitney Brummett

Sept. 17, 2007

Whitney Brummett is a leader for the Florida State women’s golf team who has been a member of the Seminoles’ starting line-up during each of her fours years in Tallahassee. She is one of the most competitive players and one of two seniors in the Seminoles’ starting line-up this season. Brummett has played in one NCAA Championship, two NCAA Regionals and three ACC Championships and has helped Florida State earn three tournament championships – the spring 2006 Ryder/Florida Championship, the fall 2006 Cougar Classic and the spring 2007 Florida State hosted Chrysler Challenge during her career. She sat down with seminoles.com as she and her teammates begin preparation for the Lady Tar Heel Invitational during the first week of October.

Describe yourself in four words.
I would say that I am independent, goofy, motivated and intense.

You are stranded in a raft boat out in the middle of the ocean, choose three things that you would have with you and tell us why?
First, I would choose a radio because I can’t live without singing. Second, I would choose a friend because I would be too scared to be stranded in the ocean by myself. Third, I would want to have chocolate with me because I get the worst cravings for chocolate.

If you had ten million dollars, what would you do with it all?
First, I would take my family on a really nice vacation together. Then I would take the rest to invest in opening a hotel, restaurant and club all in one, which is something I would really like to do in the future!

What was the most exciting moment at the Cougar Classic? What could you have done differently?
In the first round I had a turkey, which is three birdies in a row. I also had a stretch where I birdied four out of five holes; both of those were pretty exciting. Something I wish I could have done differently was to take more advantage of the short par five holes. I should have been able to make some birdies on those short par fives.

What are you doing to prepare for the Lady Tar Heel Invitational?
I have been working hard on my alignment to improve the accuracy of my shots.

What are your individual and team goals for this season?
Individually, I would like to have three top ten finishes and make the All-ACC and once again be an Academic All-American. As for the team goals, I would like for us to win two or three tournaments, finish top two at the ACC Championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament, where we can hopefully finish in the top ten.

What do you do while traveling to golf tournaments with the team?
Most of the time everyone likes to watch movies and study for school, but I mostly like to play games. Some of my favorite games are Scattegories, Trivial Pursuit and Catchphrase.

It is an hour before your team leaves for a major tournament. You and a teammate are in the movie theaters. You want to leave but she is dying to see the ending. Would you leave and meet her at the bus or would you stay and potentially miss the bus?
I would stay and take a chance on missing the bus, but I don’t break the rules when it comes to being on time. I would convince my friend to leave with me and we could go back and see the movie another time.

What is the strangest or weirdest thing one of your teammates has ever done?
I can’t really recall of anything really strange, but that’s probably because I am the one doing the strange and weird things, I just don’t realize it.

Your favorite FSU gear is?
Anything we wear that has bright, bold colors. Those are my favorite!

What are the two best things about Don A. Veller Seminole Golf Course?
The Seminole Golf Course is in a convenient location and once completed, we will have an awesome new practice range.
