It had been thirteen years since Sam Cassell last hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy with the Houston Rockets, but that all changed Tuesday night as Cassell and the Boston Celtics were crowned the 2008 NBA Champions.
Cassell joined the Celtics earlier this season after leaving the Los Angeles Clippers. Having the opportunity to play with former teamates Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen was part of the reason Cassell joined the Celtics on a quest for their first NBA title since 1986.
Cassell is a member of the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame and had his jersey retired earlier this season. Many Florida State fans remember how Cassell thrived under pressure and routinely came through in the clutch for the Seminoles.
Cassell was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets. Cassell split time in the back-court with Kenny Smith and was an integral part of the back-to-back championships won by Houston in 1994-1995.

Since opening the new track and field building at the Mike Long Track the coaches and student-athletes have been looking to add some personal touches to the building. They already may be running short on trophy cases as Head Coach Bob Braman was named the USTFCCA National Coach of the Year Tuesday for the third straight year.
What’s even more impressive is that this award brings Braman’s total to 19 national coaching awards since 2005.
This award comes on the heels of the Seminoles’ third-straight national track and field championship which they captured this past weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. The Noles already have their sights set on next season and a 4th straight title. If they can win again next year the Noles would join elite company with Arkansas, USC and UTEP as the only programs to win four in a row.
