Postseason Questions Answered

Nov. 30, 2010

The following questions have been asked frequently over the last two days so we thought we would take a moment to answer them.

HOW DOES THE BOWL PAYOUT WORK?

The misconception is that a trip to a “higher level” bowl means a financial windfall for the participating institution.  The fact is that in the ACC all proceeds from bowl games, as well as men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament basketball games and regular season television revenue, goes into the pool that the league divides in equal shares at the end of the year.

For example, the two bowls most frequently mentioned for FSU right now, the Discover Orange Bowl and the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, provide a $1.7 million and $1.1 million dollar bowl allowance, respectively, from which the competing teams must cover all travel and bowl expenses.

WILL FSU AND VIRGINIA TECH MAKE MONEY FROM THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP PARTICIPATION?

Under the shared arrangement discussed above, all ACC schools will benefit from the Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship game, but the two participants each receive $160,000 to cover travel and expenses associated with the game.  Florida State is treating the championship like a standard road game with only essential personnel traveling with the team.  See the note on the Marching Chiefs below.

IS THE BAND GOING TO THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP?

The Marching Chiefs will be in Charlotte for the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game.  The FSU Athletics Department will finance the trip for 450 band members in Bank of America Stadium.  So, the Fight Song and War Chant should be loud and strong.

HOW MANY TICKETS DOES EACH TEAM GET FOR ACC CHAMPIONSHIP?

Both the Coastal and Atlantic Champions get 10,000 tickets to sell for the game.  Virginia Tech sold out of its allotment and Florida State is within 1,500 of selling out its allotment as of noon on Tuesday.

WHO IS THE HOME TEAM?

The alternating arrangement fell to the Coastal champion this year so Virginia Tech is the home team designate.  The Hokies opted to wear their white “road” jerseys so Florida State will wear garnet jerseys and gold pants.

WILL SUN SPORTS BROADCAST PRIME TIME `NOLES FROM THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP

Unless logistical issues at Bank of America Stadium prevent it, Sun Sports will broadcast the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship game as a part of Prime Time `Noles on Sunday night.
