INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – On day two of the 2017 Oracle ITA Fall Championships, which hosts the top singles and doubles players from around the country, the Florida State men’s tennis team advanced two singles players to day three. Florida State is one of two schools to have two singles players left in the main draw.

“I am proud of our guys today, especially Lucas,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist.

Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and senior Guy Iradukunda advanced to the round of 16 after both winning their matches in straight sets. Poullain took down the two seed and No. 11 ranked Brandon Holt of USC. Poullain breezed through the first set 6-3. The second set was tied 3-3 before Poullain won three of the next four sets to take set two 6-4.

“Lucas has played two really good matches so far this tournament,” said Hultquist. “He beat one of the best players in college tennis today in two seeded Brandon Holt.”

Iradukunda gathered the Garnet and Gold’s second singles win of the day and fifth of the tournament with a win over Jackie Tang of Columbia. After a tough three-set match yesterday Iradukunda took down Tang in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

“Guy is having another good tournament,” said Hultquist. “He played much sharper today and closed his match out by winning eight of his last nine points.”

Poullain and doubles partner Jose Gracia faced off against Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge of Wisconsin. They fell down early and lost the first set 6-1. The Seminole duo went down 4-1 in the second set before they started to make a comeback. They could not hold on as they lost the second set 6-4.

“I am really pleased with Jose’s and Alex’s results from the weekend,” said Hultquist. “Alex has played a good fall and has continued to develop as a player.”

The Seminoles will have a chance to play in two matches tomorrow as both the round of 16 and the quarterfinals are played on Friday.

“Tomorrow is a tough day,” said Hultquist. “There is a possibility of two matches and we will need to get ready for both of them tomorrow.”
