Pre-Season Honors Begin To Roll In For Florida State Basketball Team

Oct. 1, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State senior Al Thornton is a pre-season All-America Third-Team selection and a pre-season All-ACC First-Team selection and the Seminole basketball team is predicted to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by the writers and editors of the Athlon Magazine’s 2006-07 NCAA College Basketball preview issue which is on newsstands now.

Thornton was recognized by the 2007 ACC Handbook which also picked him as an All-ACC First-Team selection and which also predicted the Seminoles to finish fifth in the ACC standings. Sophomore guard Toney Douglas was also recognized by the ACC Handbook as an All-ACC Third-Team selection. Douglas was also recognized by Athlon to be among the nation’s top transfer player entering the season.

From the writers and editors and of the Athlon College Sports Annual: “Thornton’s inside-outside game notwithstanding, the strength of the Seminoles’ bid to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine seasons rests with a seasoned backcourt. Juniors Jason Rich and Isaiah Swann, each logging 29 starts, combined to produce 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 136 assist and 83 steals last season.”

Said the writers and editors of the ACC Handbook: “What might make the difference (for Florida State) in 2007 is the return of three starters – led by senior forward Al Thornton – and four others in supporting roles , who were responsible for 60 percent of the team’s scoring , rebounding assists and steals.”

The Seminoles, who advanced to the second round of the NIT, finished fifth in the ACC standings with a 9-7 record and defeated No. 1 ranked Duke during the 2005-06 season, return three starters and nine letter winners for the 2006-07 season as it looks to continue building on the rock-solid foundation which has been put into place by fifth-year head coach Leonard Hamilton. Led by Thornton, a candidate for All-America, National and ACC Player of the Year Candidate, the Seminoles return more than 60 percent of their total scoring (.647 percent) and rebounding (.603 percent) from a season ago. Thornton is Florida State’s top returning scorer (16.1 ppg), rebounder (6.9 rpg) and leader in both field goals and free throws made as he enters the 2006-07 season as one of the nation’s top collegiate players.
