Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State alumnus Gabrielle Reece hit the beach on August 11 and 12 for the Manhattan Beach Open in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The 4-on-4 beach volleyball event is the second tournament of its kind for Reece who participated in an AVP Crocs Tour stop in Chicago at the beginning of the month.
Reece, a star on the Seminole volleyball team from 1987 to 1990, is married to extreme surfer Laird Hamilton and they have a daughter, Reece, who will turn four in October. Coming off a six-year hiatus from volleyball, and expecting her second child in January, Reece was excited to return to the sport that started it all.
“It felt good to play again,” she said. “But, yes, I also felt rusty.”
In 2006, Reece lobbied the AVP to include four-player events as part of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour which begun in April and runs through September.
“I played in the four-women tournaments years ago,” Reece said. “Last summer, I went to the AVP to have them include a four-women tournament. I think it’s a very good game to transition from indoor to the beach. If we could construct the game like tennis, which has singles and doubles matches, it would be an easy transition.”
Reece’s foursome included Logan Tom, Carrie Dodd and Nancy Mason. Although her team did not advance to the finals at the Manhattan Beach Open, the 37 year-old Reece remains committed to the 4-on-4 challenges and wants to see it continue next year, adding men as well.
