Q&A: Will Secord

March 29, 2011

What is your mindset coming into spring practice competing for the back-up quarterback position?

Secord:  I try to take every day one day at a time. I try to do my best and to focus on the stuff that I need to focus on as a player to get better. Whatever happens from there happens. I just try to do my best everyday and to take the coaching to get better. Like Clint (Trickett) said I don’t feel like it is a competition between he and I. Clint and I are good friends. I feel like we are both trying to get better as players and we are both trying to get as good as we can and that’s all we can do.

How has the transition been from fourth quarter drills to spring practice?

Secord:  It’s gone well. The first couple of days everybody was just trying to get back into the swing of things. The tempo has picked up in practice and I have eliminated some of the bonehead stuff that I was doing before. Now I am able to focus on the little things to get better.

Coach Fisher wants you to throw the ball a lot during the spring. Has this been a wear and tear on your body?

Secord:  I feel like we are in good enough shape to do it so I don’t feel like it is that much of a wear and tear on us. We do get a lot of throws and we try to ice our arms to keep in the best shape possible.

What are some of the things that you have done since last year to grow and get better?

Secord:  I have a better grasp on the concepts, the coverages and the reads. I am just trying to take the coaching. Whatever coach says I need to work on I just focus on it that day so I can move on to the next thing and get better at that.

What are some of the things that you need to focus on right now?

Secord:  Drops, hip placement, shoulder placement in my drops to increase my accuracy. When it comes to the defense I need to know what I am looking at. Coach (Jimbo) Fisher says to train your eyes to see what you are looking at so that you always know what is going on.

Do you relish this opportunity knowing that you have a chance this offseason to prove yourself and earn additional playing time?

Secord:  It is a good feeling and it is nice to have the opportunity. At the same time I feel like we are in practice again and we are just trying to get better. We compete and we are trying to earn that spot but at the same time we just want to get better and move on.
