Q&A With Florida State Freshmen Volleyball Players BonSalle, Young and Byrd

Aug. 15, 2006

Tallahassee, Fla. –

While the 2006 Florida State University volleyball season is less than two weeks old, a trio of freshmen got an early jump on their first year of collegiate competition. Jackie BonSalle (Albuquerque, N.M.), Lauren Young (Ben Wheeler, Texas) and Brittany Byrd (Orlando, Fla.) came to Tallahassee in the middle of the summer to get a leg up on classes and preseason training. A member of sports information staff caught up with the trio and asked them about their summer experience.

Jackie BonSalle
SID:
What is your favorite part about being in college?
JB: “Right now it would have to be volleyball, because it is all that I have done.”

SID: How important was it for you to get to school early and to get a head start?
JB: “In my case, it’s really important because I’m really skinny and I haven’t put on too much muscle yet.”

SID: What are your expectations for the season?
JB: “Bond with the team, get to know the coaches, work on individual skills.”

SID: What has been the biggest challenge so far?
JB: “Gaining weight.”

Lauren Young:
SID:
How important was it for you to get to school early and to get a head start?
LY: “It’s big because there is a difference coming from high school to college. I think it’s going to be a big wake-up call for the girls who didn’t have a chance come in during the summer.”

SID: What is your favorite part about college so far?
LY: “Living on my own and having to do things for myself. I’m gaining weight, so I’m happy about that.”

SID: What has been the biggest challenge so far?
LY: “Adjusting from high school to college, it’s a big difference already. We haven’t even started our season yet and workouts and competition is very different.”

SID: What are your expectations for the season?
LY: “I just want to play one game. I want to bond with my team, get to know everybody and learn the college game which is vastly different from the high school game.”

Brittany Byrd:
SID:
How important was it for you to get to school early and to get a head start?
BB: “I liked it because of the warms up and workouts. I was able to get into the swing of things early.”

SID: “What is your favorite part of being in college?
BB: “Having the independence you get when you leave home.”

SID: What are you expectations for the upcoming season?
BB: “I expect to do really well. We had a talk with coach (Todd) Kress and we expect really good things.”

SID: What has been the biggest challenge so far?
BB: “Working out has been the biggest challenge. I didn’t really work out before I got here.”
