March 26, 2004

ATHENS, Ga. –
Florida State University senior Katie Quinney shot a two-under par 70 and is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings after the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Quinney is only four strokes off the individual lead at what is considered to be one of the toughest tournaments in women’s collegiate golf this year. Quinney has paced the Seminoles to a tie for 10th place in the team standings.

Quinney (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) led the Seminoles through the first 18 holes as she cut nearly 10 strokes from her spring season average of 79.16. Her first round score of 70 ties her career best score a round. She also carded a 70 in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate during the spring of 2003. Quinney finished in third place at the fall 2003 University of Alabama for her best career finish as a Seminole.

Sophomore Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) is the second ranked Seminole as she carded a three-over par 75. She is in a tie for 27th place in the individual standings.

Florida State is in a tie for 10th in the team standings. The Seminoles begin play in the second round only eight strokes out of the top five of the team standings with all five of those teams ranked in the nation’s top 15. Florida State, which won the championship of the University of Alabama Tournament during the fall season, has earned five top-10 team finishes in seven events this year.

Oho State, ranked sixth in the nation leads the team standings after the first round with a scored of 291. Top ranked Duke and fifth ranked Georgia are in second place – only one stroke behind – with identical team scores of 292. A limited Duke squad of four was led by Brittany Lang, who also leads the individual field after shooting a course record and Liz Murphey Classic best 66.

The second round of 18 will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the final round beginning as a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Sunday.
