TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State’s James Ramsey was named to the 60-man midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List as announced Tuesday, May 1 by USA Baseball.
The watch list will continue to be a “rolling” list until May 29 — when the final 30 semifinalists for the award are announced — ensuring that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the award. The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live at MLB Network’s studios for the second year in a row, with a presentation scheduled for Friday, July 6. Through USA Baseball’s partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), the presentation will also be simulcast with a live stream available from GoldenSpikesAward.com, MLB.com and USABaseball.com.
Ramsey is in the midst of a spectacular senior season in which he leads Florida State in runs scored (55), home runs (9), triples (6), total bases (105), slugging percentage (.705) and on-base percentage (.528).
The senior captain has also played tremendous defensive in centerfield since making the move to that position at the beginning of the season after serving as the Seminoles’ starting right fielder the last two years. Ramsey has posted a perfect fielding percentage in 100 chances, while tallying a team-high four outfield assists.
Heading into the final month of the regular season, the Alpharetta, Ga., native ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in nine offensive categories as he leads the league in runs scored, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Ramsey also ranks in the top 10 nationally in five offensive categories including second in runs per game (1.28), third in runs scored and fourth in on-base percentage.
Ramsey was recently named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, while claiming several preseason All-America accolades to open the 2012 campaign. He garnered first team accolades from ESPN.com, Perfect Game and College Baseball Insider, while earning second team honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. His offensive production through the first half of the season earned him Top Hitter accolades as part of Baseball America’s midseason awards.
USA Baseball officials will announce the 30 semifinalists for the 2012 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 29. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2012. Tuesday, May 29, marks the day when amateur baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 5, USA Baseball will announce the three finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
